Re: Vote For the February Cover

All are great photos! "Eye" liked #3! The eyes have it! As soon as "eye" saw it in the 10 submitted I knew this will be the winner! Come on folks vote for #3!

If "eye" were a Billy and saw this guy and another 99 miore like him yellin' like demons from Hades, eye'd turn tail and head for the hills!

#3 is Joe Loehle, former member of the Southern Guard Living History Association who had to depart the hobby to ramp up his business. Before he left I asked him for some photos to publish of what we all aspire to. This is but one. He has a Union company grade officer photo and a CS enlisted cavalry photo on horseback that will be going up in the future. Joe is a true gentleman and easily the most versatile and one of most knowledgable living historians I know. He also makes a fantastic CS cap or kepi. We all miss him and hope he returns to the hobby. The wild eyed look was something he cultivated for the photo in trying to capture a rough and tumble soldier of the type that might have served in the Missouri State Guard or other early war militia volunteer.

PS - Robert Szabo took this photo I believe around 2003-2004. The fidelity of the image is something else I admire about Bob's work.

Re: Vote For the February Cover

#2 and #3 are both very good. Personally, I leaned toward #2. The impression looks good, to me, and the subject has a certain authentic look to him. I also like the fact that it is something new. I don't think we've had any musicians on the cover, yet.

#3, the photo of Joe Loehle, is also very good. Joe's impression has always been a hard one to find any flaws in, but the "wild eyed" Confederate pose seems to be a bit too popular and I feel as though it's a little overdone in this image. We also had a similar image on the cover back in August.

Marty did not mention this, but Matthew received the Bronze Star for his action in Iraq. Matthew is, indeed, an Officer and a Gentleman and we in the Tater Mess look forward to his return in March

I don't know Marty and don't want to slight his brother but please keep modern awards and rank out of this.

I say this with the caveat of having just returned from a year in Afghanistan! Maybe I'm wrong but I think those have no place here. That is the "Modern" or real world. I'm a patriot myself and will be the first to to defend our country and have for the past 20 plus years, along with many others here.

Matthew, come back home soon, safe and sound!

Image #3 is the most authentic looking out of the bunch. It's superior in every way, and would fool many, as an original.

Why is it not winning? I have no idea!

Vote for #3..... It looks real.

Look pard, I am a disable Veteran, having served as an enlisted man and as an RA Officer. Don't throw your BS in my face ok. All I was doing was saying what Marty did not in reference to his brother. Thank God we will live in a country where we can exercise our free speech. If what I said was against the rules of this forum, I am sure I would have heard from the moderators. Since you are not a moderator, I think you have the right to tell me what you think, but you do not have the right to tell me to not voice my thoughts either.

I AM A MODERATOR AND A VETERAN, EITHER TONE IT DOWN OR LOOK FOR A TIME OUT. This poll is conducted based on the photo not what the individual in the photo did or did not do. JK

Wow, that was a close vote this month and deservedly so. It was a tough choice.

Congratulations to Marty Rubin for his winning submission. It is an excellent image and his reason for growing the beard makes it even more inspiring.

I will have the new cover up in the next couple of days. Thanks so much to everyone who submitted this month. We will ask for new submittals on February 20th for the March cover. Be watching this folder for the "Wanna Be on the March Cover?" post.

Thanks also to everyone who participated in the voting. This thread is officially closed.
