The "Prodigal Sons Mess" appear left to right: Jason Krausz, Nathan Macejack, Mark Krausz, and Riley Ewen.

We were portraying members of Co. B, 36th Illinois Infantry, but the image can work for a generic Army of the Cumberland infantry mess as well.

The aspects of each person were:
Jason's canteen, future G.A.R. slogan "We drank from the same canteen."
Nate's simple hand on shoulder representing comeraderie among brothers (in this case literally) and eating together.
Mark's knife to defend the Union and a bible (a period item) uniting us in prayer. The blue star on the canteen represents Sheridan's 3rd Div., 20th Corps.
Riley's hardtack -the infantryman's staple food and coffee cup -the infantryman's staple marching drink.
Nathan's, Mark's, and Riley's arms locked to "stand united and fight together."

The image was taken in July, 2006, by tintype artist Steve Ingram.

      Mark,

I remember when you boys sat for this image. Your descriptive symbolism of the image is bully!

Re: Vote For the March Cover of the AC

A little background on my picture.

The title of the image is, "Death Before Dishonor." My portrayal is of an early war Connecticut Volunteer Infantry Color Sergeant.

The unit I portray is the 17th Connecticut. Though mustered in at Septermer of 1862, Two companys have been reported to be comprised of many reenlistments from earlier 90 day Connecticut enlistments. * http://home.att.net/~DogSgt/Seventeenth.html

The buttons on the uniform have an interesting history of their own. These buttons are of original Connecticut State buttons. By saying this I don't mean they are 140+ years old. Joe Shiappa of the 27thCVI, sent me an email when I ordered these. According to him, the buttons are produced out of the same Waterbury mold that made the buttons during The Civil War. I can't tell you how thrilled I am to be touching buttons made using an original mold.
        http://www.27thcvi.4t.com/buttons.html

The Chevrons are of a basic pattern seen in a thread started here on the AC. http://www.authentic-campaigner.com/...color+sergeant

Though not a common design, it is based off original chevrons. Each one is hand embroidered. I personally think they came out better than I ever expected.

The quarter plate was taken at Mill Springs, KY. September/October of 2007

Photographer was Mr. Wendell Decker, of Vintage Image Studios.

Number 2 - why? In the middle of reading Echoes of Battle The Atlanta Campaign (buy it, its great), the book is full of photographs just prior or after the campaign, of guys who look just those guys.

All of the images are very good, but my vote goes to number 2. The description of the photo is definitely one of the best I have seen.

                    I voted for number two.

-Take those boys, cut thier hair, put them in modern uniforms, and they look like they could be in the 1st Infantry Division.

-Whoever the boy was who submitted the Mid-Late War Confederate image...try again next month.

While all three are very good and worthy, #2 was the only one that really got an immediate response from me as soon as I saw it. The others, I had to look at and study for a little while.

Both # 2 and # 3 are fine images and all of those in the image have a fine impression. What tips me to vote for #3 is the fact that you can see the feet of the neck stand (sorry if I am not using the correct term) used to keep the person sitting/standing for the image from moving too much. It is not something seen in too many modern studio images.
