    Re: We've heard the excuses....

Somewhat like Matt Woodburn, I donate all the profits from my Civil War book publishing to historic preservation. Let me hasten to add that that amounts only to a few hundred bucks a year.

Let us also not forget the various CW reenacting organizations who raise money during the year by various means and donate those funds to preservation causes. Added up over the years, it can become a significant contribution, beyond that added from registration fees, etc.

We were recently able to donate $1,000.00 to an effort with a 7/1 match, turning it into an $8,000.00 donation.

Regarding publishing donations, I am with you. Here's a real world concept...You have to cover your publishing expenses to have anything to donate to preservation. The realities are sometimes more is needed. The Watchdog raised more for preservation raffling off a cartridge box than from publishing the magazine one year.

I know its taboo to talk modern military on here, but the mentioned combined federal campaign by Doug is a great thing. All soldiers are asked to donate on a yearly basis to the program. CWPT is on the list along with alot of otherr State and local Societies. As a Officer in the Army i encourage my soldiers to donate to something near to their heart, not just the first on the list..

You take 2 dollars a month out of each soldiers paycheck for a year and thats alot of money. Officers are asked to push for $15 a month.

Just caveating what Chris Daley said about getting money taken directly out of paychecks.

I give to the CWPT, and I also try to do fund raising raffles for smaller sites as well. Speaking of those smaller sites........ we will be doing a raffle to support Marmaduke's Raid Preservation site. Check it out on the event site if you don't know anything about it. If you would like to donate to the event only please give Frank Aufmuth or myself a pm. If you would like to donate an item to the raffle give us a holler on that too!

One option we don't have up North is proximity to a preserved battlefield, so to volunteer labor isn't much of an option.

                    Hmmn...interesting response.

While it is true that the Northern brothers/sisters, Far Westerners, and some Deep Southerners have less Civil War battlefields to donate/volunteer labor to...my own time travelling in Central/Western PA, and Ohio have revealed that there is no shortage of historic sites, whether they be prison camps, hospitals, historic homes/schools, shipyards, forts...and indeed there are many battlefields from earlier wars (F&I, Rev, 1812, Mexican, Seminole, Black-Hawk) and later (Indian wars, Span-Am, WWI, WWII), which have recieved much less hype than 19th century sites.

If your'e willing to volunteer labor, but cannot tavel "X" hours to Virginia, Carolina, Tennessee, Mississippi...etc...for your chance to sweat in the sun...I suggest you take a look in your own backyard, and see what historic sites may be in need of help.

In the end, historic sites of every era are vital to our American Heritage...and to let any of these fall into obscurity/history would be a real shame.

I give through registration fees, specific donations, and through our reenactor organization, which raises significant funds throughout the year (often, but not exclusively, through CWPT).
