There is a lot of talk about preservation being important to people on this forum, so I thought I would put some options out there so people could expand on "how they give". Please vote for all that apply.

Re: We've heard the excuses....
It is also good for everyone to know that you don't have to give in large amounts. It everyone just sent in a few dollars for preservation it would be helpful. Also, if a person can not afford to give money, there is plenty to do as far as writting letters and e-mails and making calls to Politicians etc. There is always more that can be done beyond giving money.Rob Walker

Paul,
I figured with the nature of this site, the number of folks who fall into that category would be a small minority. I'm sure there are a couple thoughMike "Dusty" Chapman

How about folks who have charitable donations taken directly out of our paychecks? Most employers and payroll companies do this. As a participant in such a program, even a little bit each pay period adds up over year or a decade of giving.[COLOR="DarkRed"] [B][SIZE=2][FONT=Book Antiqua]Christopher J. Re: We've heard the excuses....
One important category was left out, that being those of us who live on or near Civil War sites and donate our time and money locally. I can't see sending my money off three or four states away when projects in my area are just as important.
Several years ago I ceased being a member of the CWPT when I asked how much of their money is spent in Virginia versus the rest of the states. The answer I received was that over 50% of the funds were spent in Virginia with the remainder divided up among the other 49 states. When I asked why this was so the representative told me the reason was because the "majority" of the war was fought in Virginia. Since then all of my donations have gone directly to local preservation projects. I do not belong to any preservation organizations.
As shocking as this may be for some, in my pecking order of my charitable donation amounts I put St. Judes above preservation.Last edited by JimKindred; 03-12-2008, 11:30 AM.Jim Kindred

Re: We've heard the excuses....
Since some of my answers are not on the poll, I'll answer here.
I attend "preservation" events and have given through my registration fee and in addition to.
I have volunteered to provide cleanup/preservation of a site. It has been Fort Granger when we pulled stumps one year, and rebuilt the eroding wall another.
Through my blanket business, I donated part of the price of the blankets to battlefield preservation. The sites are listed on my blanket website.
I don't belong to a preservation group because I live on the Franklin battlefield and that's my "group" now. I give alot of money to that battlefield and the sites around it.

I belong to CWPT and I do give several times a year. I always check out what battlefields they are rasing funds for on their web site. I choose one that I like, send my donation, but, earmark the donation for that single project I picked.
Last year the project that I gave to was Champion Hill Battlefield.sigpic

In all seriousness, I will be worth more to the preservation cause dead than I am, or will be, alive. I named CWPT in my will several years ago to receive a generous donation. I still donate while I'm alive, though.Joe Madden

Re: We've heard the excuses....
I'm new, and only recently became a member of a preservation society.
But in the past, I have gone on river clean-ups of scenic Missouri streams and floating rivers with the park service. I enjoy the waterways, its only right I should help preserve them, and giving back a weekend of labor just makes you feel good. You learn a lot, and frankly, its amazing what you find, heh. Disappointing in most cases, but amazing none the less.
I would be proud to do the same for a Civil War battlefield. Never been aware or informed of an effort that way though.Last edited by Abrams; 03-12-2008, 05:18 PM.Ron Mueller

I don't belong to any national groups but I did check local groups. My reenacting unit and the Venture Scouts I work with often work on preservation projects. Not sure if this counts but I know the effort that they put into things and the volunteer hours they give.Robert Collett

Re: We've heard the excuses....
Over the past several years I have volunteered time and given more than my dues to CWPT. Not a regret in any of that! Now, I am also supporting the ACPP! However, I have also come to realize that there are small groups and organizations around here in Kentucky that needs attention as well, who are trying to preserve what is left and do what they can. I decided, starting back in January, that I would continue to support CWPT money wise on a minimum and focus more attention on the local projects such as Fort Duffield and Perryville.
I guess it boils down to that I try to help where ever I can when I can.
All for a good cause!
