Beverly Heath called me this morning to let me know that Charles had died last night. He had a heart attack and they were unable to revive him in the emergency room.

There are no particulars as of yet, but as soon as someone knows, we will get them posted.

That is an incredible shock! His memory will live on in hundreds of authentics every time they eat period rations at an event.......

      Re: Sad News

I am very saddened by this news. I didn't know him personally other than through the AC and other forums, but it was obvious he was a wonderful person and a great asset to his comrades in the hobby. My condolences to his wife and family.

        Re: Sad News

I'm incredibly shocked and saddened! I was really looking forward to working with him next month at Spangler's Spring. Now, I feel a total emptiness. Charles was just such an original character, there's no other way to put it. This news is a punch in the gut...I'm so sorry for Bev.

          Friends,
This is very sad news, both for me personally, and for the Civil War reenacting community as a whole. Charles will be greatly missed. That's about all I can say right now, I'm too upset to write much.

So very sorry to hear this. Charles has been one of the anchors of this hobby for many, many years. His presence and acerbic wit will be missed.

My deepest sympathies to Beverly and Charles' family.

                Re: Sad News

This is a tough one to take and even tougher to try and make sense of my emotions. I knew him many for many, many years, I could always expect a call every so often to discuss new items that might work well for my business and just shoot the breeze...saw him all the time on AOL as well as in the field.
Im reminded of the story of Lee marching in a parade or something towards the end of his life and staying out of step on purpose. "The Chawls" marched to his own drum, pushed the envelope...down your throat if necessary, and touched the lives of just about everyone in this hobby like no other.
Its a quiet day here now and it shall remain so with Charles and Bev in my thoughts.

Can anyone provide a brief bio on Charles? I know nothing about him outside of his posts here and his role in foodways and battlefield preservation.

                    Re: Sad News

My most sincere sympathy to Beverly and the family. I only attended one event with Mr. Heath. I'll probably never forget the sight of him and his buddies doing the dishes in our make shift kitchen. With a Tom Sawyer flair, they almost made me wish that I could have that much fun doing dishes. Almost.

It is hard to understand how we could lose someone so full of life as Charles Heath. He will be missed.

It was an honor to serve under Charles at DM-X, it was the only time I met him, but walked away with fond memories. My thoughts and prayers are with his family in their time of loss.
