  • SWCW Conference Update: Scholarships and More

Online registration, a downloadable brochure and even scholarship opportunities are now available for Women at Gettysburg: The 10th Conference on Women and the Civil War, scheduled for July 25-27, 2008 at Wilson College in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania.

The conference, which is staged by the Society for Women and the Civil War, is open to the public for a nominal fee. It features presentations on the lives and roles of women in the Civil War. To register for the conference online, go to www.swcw.org. To download a copy of the conference brochure, go to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/cwcw-chat/files/.

The Society is also pleased to announce the First Annual Scholarship Competition for its 10th Conference on Women and the Civil War. The scholarship, which is for high school, college or graduate school students, includes two nights’ accommodations, full conference registration, field trip and meals -- a total value of approximately $400. Transportation to and from the conference is not included.

Scholarship winners will be selected on the basis of a presentation, based on original research, on the lives and efforts of women in the Civil War era. The subjects may be examined from a microhistory perspective. The submissions will be judged based on the quality of the research based principally upon use of primary sources. The winners will present their research during a tabletop/posterboard session -- much like exhibits presented for National History Day -- at the conference.

    Applicants must submit:
    1. A synopsis of the presentation, not more than 3 pages. The synopsis must include a description of visual aids that will be used to illustrate and highlight the presentation.
    2. A bibliography of the primary and secondary sources used. Our operational definitions can be viewed at http://www.swcw.org/Guidance.html.
    3. A personal vitae or biography, not more than 1 page, including contact information.

Email submissions are preferred and should be sent to swcwscholar@yahoo.com no later than May 15, 2008. If you are submitting by mail, please include both hard copy and a CD. (Both Word and WordPerfect are acceptable formats.) Mail submissions to:
The Society for Women and the Civil War
    Box 9066 at 8345 NW 66th Street
    Miami, Florida 33166

The Society will contact all winners by June 15, 2008. Please direct any questions, inquiries or electronic submissions to Polly Steenhagen at swcwscholar@yahoo.com or visit www.swcw.org.

NOTE: The Society for Women and the Civil War is an organization dedicated to increasing awareness and understanding of women’s lives and roles in the American Civil War through original and innovative research. The SWCW’s 2008 conference takes place three weeks after the 145th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg. The lives of women in that area and their roles during this pivotal battle will be addressed in the conference’s field trips and some of its presentations.
