  • 150th events in Texas

The 150th anniversary (sorry, I can't spell the word for this) of the beginnning of the Civil War is coming up in 2011. I'm not sure yet what type of activities are planned in Texas; I know the THC is planning to put together some kind of steering committee for state sanctioned events. I'm sure there will be limited focus on the home front.

With that in mind, I was thinking that this group of people might be interested in a series of events focusing on the home front at different stages of the war. We're looking at a Henkel Square event in Feb 2010 with a secession scenario; if this occurs we have set the stage for the rest of the four year cycle. For instance 2011 could be a recruiting event, 2012 could be the reaction to Shiloh or Antietam, 2013 could be reaction to Gettysburg although hot, etc. all the way to Lincoln's assasination. We could also include some type of Juneteenth activity, return of wounded or dead soldiers, soldiers on leave, etc.

These events would allow for significant military/civilian interaction, opportunities for troop support activities as well. I only suggest Henkel Square as the location as it has several intact buildings and we have already established a good relationship with the site; they are willing to have us back at anytime. There are also fields near the site that we may be able to access for military encampment. Also horses are allowed on site.

None of this is thought out very far, but wanted to see if there is an interest in this type of activity for the 150th in Texas.

I have been putting the bug into the ears of the powers that be that Sabine Pass needs a 24 or 32lbs. for the 150th!

As for that Ft. McKavett will be placing special emphasis on the 1859 abandonment of the post this March during the annual living history event! Sadly though, the fort isn't reoccupied until 1868, so the 150ACW is going to really just pass us by, but I AM working on my jaguar skin trousers for the 2012 at Fort Lancaster!!! :D
