  • getting spots out of silk

The Southern Gardener and Receipt Book gives two different cures for greasy stains on silk. One involves essence of lemon and oil of turpentine. The other involves powdered magnesia. I am wondering if anyone has tried these period fixes and what success they yield.

In future, I hope to be mindful to remind the child to put on her pinafore before embarking on the good turkey dinner.

    Kind regards,

Id try the magnesia first. Talc will also help if you don't mind. It may take several applications, some rubbing and a deal of patience to get it to soak up all the grease.

;)At least that particular participant did not lose all her growth tucks while playing in the woods, or do somersalts in her new hoops, or lose the skirt lifters in her train and drag the whole thing through the mud repeatedly................

Talc worked to get the turkey grease out of my black wool. I'm still brushing on the mud on the train.

Have you tried holding the stain on the train (the stain from the rain stays mainly in the train?) over a steaming teakettle? Charcoal might be more help than talc at this stage (and if it doesn't all come out, it'll help hide the mud.)

:p Actually, I'm not too worried--this dress came to me very well used from a great lady-so well worn in fact that the hem facing is eaten away and little holes are all the way around the hem. The velvet trim is getting a bit tatty, the shoulders a bit dusty looking........

In short, just the thing an older woman of very limited means but decent sensibilities might have purchased from a used clothing vendor. And the fit just somewhat off to enhance the effect.

The talc did take care of the grease well, I just have to spend some more time with the clothes brush on that mud.......

Only to drag it right through again on the Duck River Line.....

            Miz Emily,
Was this the "one" that had two turkey legs at that dinner. I thought she had a hollow leg watching her eat,
Boy, was it GOOOD time we all had that weekend.
