  • Men's Caps

    Evening all, Does anyone know of any source material on Men's caps as to the fabrics/materials used to make them and i wondered if any were made out of felt? Any direction to sources is greatly appreciated. Clifford Earl Hyde

    Mr Hyde, could you add a bit more in the lines of what sort of impression you're working with? Geographic area, occupation, economic status, anticipated activities?

    Wool felt is not out of the realm of possibility for an item of male headwear, but there are a lot of variables to be sorted first.
    Regards,

      Miss Clark, i'm not doing a civilian impression,i was thinking about this recently and thought of possible fabrics but was'nt sure. I guess the regions i want to know about are North and South both. Thank you sincerely,Clifford Earl Hyde

        I believe Mrs. Clark was asking about your impression...as some caps are going to be more specific to certain occupations, or stations in life.

        So I suppose the question your'e seeking for an answer with is;

        You are looking for period patterns of Men's Caps...and would like to know if felt is appropriate.

        Technically, slouch hats are made out of a heavy wool/hair felt...this is not the same as the felt one would pick up at the fabric store. I don't have an answer as to whether the felt from the fabric store would be appropriate or not.

        Several Cap styles exists during the period...and ALOT will depend on the climate, and job being done. As far as patterns...Simplicity came out with a Men's Work-cap pattern a few years ago...additionally the Workwoman's Guide. A Lady. 1840 also has several Men's workcap patterns available (although you'll need to size and scale these out to get a working pattern).

        Hope that helps?

          I want Ms/Mrs.Clark to know that i in no way meant to seem sarcastic in my reply but i wanted also to know about the fabrics in general. Thank you both for your information. Sincerely, Clifford Earl Hyde
