  • Learned along the way

While planning a nice little walk to several cemetaries, in observance of Confederate Memorial Day, I spent some time researching the Alabama Hospital for the Insane. Its adjacent cemetary overlooking the Black Warrior River holds the graves of a number of Confederate Soldiers who were committed to the hospital during and after the war.

While Federal troops had orders to burn ALL public buildings in Tuskaloosa, they sensibly left the hospital unmolested after the physician in charge explained the purpose.

This little booklet lists the admissions standards and governance for the Alabama Hospital for the Insane--including a listing of proper clothing to send with the patient.

Yassir, I used to be Mrs. Lawson. I still run period dyepots, knit stuff, and cause trouble.

Georgia's mental health facility of the day (still open today as Central State Hopital in the antebellum capital of Milledgeville) also saw a population increase late in the ACW and shortly thereafter, based on their veteran population.

That brings back some memories for me. As cadets at Georgia Military College we used to run by there on our morning PT runs until the administration of the hospital complained about us yelling out cadences at 6 am waking everyone up!

Don't worry about the boy. I think he can fend for himself.
