The folks at Fugawee shoes make a childs brogan for around 58 dollars, with a leather sole as an option.There's better quality shoes out there, but they usually have kids shoes in stock and ready to go,if time is an issue.

We've had good success with the leather-soled, lace-up riding boots (de-fringed) that have a blunted toe rather than a pointy one. The speed-lace hooks can be removed and replaced with plain eyelets. I really prefer the leather with leather-sole boots, as they wear better over time (and through multiple children), and can be re-soled.
