I turned to Robert Land's after studying many examples of original civilian footwear.... He's also one the only makers I know of that shapes his heels nicely, rather than leaving them bulky or straight on the sides (you should see just how shaped some period heels are, think modern cowboy boots). !

I have cut and pasted this from another post as I am curious to see some period images of the heels that Mr. McWherter has mentioned above. I have been doing some searching, but am fairly anxious to get a 'quick fix' (modern mindset I suppose!)

Any help (with verifiable provenance) would be greatly appreciated, whether this be paintings, period advertising or photographs.

Robert Land's site has a good picture that illustrates this:

There are other shoes out there that show this, but I can't find any pics that illustrate this better than the one above.

      I hope this is helpful!

I'm hesitant to give quick fixes especially when there are so many resources available for research. I did some quick Google searching for images of original footwear and had no trouble coming up with results. I have seen original boot and shoe heels even more shaped than these, but I'll leave it up to folks to go out and do their own research and find out for themselves what the reality of original footwear is. England has some of the best resources available for the study of original clothing the Museum of Costume in Bath, the V&A in London and the Gallery of English Costume in Manchester are but a few extraordinary resources in your country.

Here are a couple images of a pair original Hessian style boots from the 1850s. Notice how narrow the sole is, the shape of the heels, the quality of the kid skin and the narrow toe:

A typical CW period heel feature us that the heels are shaped like a horseshoe rather than a U like modern shoes. Few makers of repro footwear have thsi feature in theri heels.

I very much agree about the quality of Robert Land's reproduction boots. The same is true of the heels of womens boots. Many are bulky and large. Rob's are more narrow,a bit taller, more of a "half circle" shape, and right on repro of originals.
I swear by his boots and won't own anything else. If it takes 6mo. to get the best, I wait :)
