    Here is an interesting link regarding the birth of the oldest labor union in the U.S.A. The Brotherhood of the Footboard later to become Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers:

        I'd also suggest Philip Foner's History of the Labor Movement in the United States, Volume I, which starts in colonial times and takes the reader through the immediate postwar period. Great stuff, and cheap at the price:
