    Re: Nightshirts & Nightcaps

After working with linen extensively making gentlemen's dress shirts, I've decided my underpinnings will be linen from now on! It does indeed wear much better than cotton of any weight.

As for gentlemen's night shirts, It's been suggested that I make some for my inventory....but oh when will I find time to make up anything ahead for inventory/"ready made" market!! I would love to see some photos of the original night shirts!!!

As for my own wardrobe..it's the story of the cobblers' children going barefoot!! Will the seamstress ever get new underpinnings as well as a couple of new dresses. I'm sure everyone is getting as sick of looking at my three standard dresses as I am of wearing them:cry_smile

Mr. Smith and Mrs. Murphy, many kind thanks for responding to this thread. Mr. Smith, I would very much like to see those photographs you mentioned, and you're absolutely correct that our ancestors had a flair for fashion, and decoration. I like the idea of the embroidery and tend to find that a task for evenings. I don't know why, or can explain it very well, but I have a habit of sitting and working on projects like that almost every day. Trust me, I have zillions of period clothes, yet only a handfull of the modern everyday stuff. It may be odd to say, but I just enjoy sewing period stuff by hand for the delight of it, pure relaxation.
And Mrs. Murphy, I had a little chuckle at your idea of the cobblers shoes...
Myself, I do not sew for anyone except my family, so anytime that needs must that I have my own wish list, I always sew my clothes last. This provides me that inspirational kick-in-the-pants to get ALL my sewing done in a timely manner. Mind you Mrs. Murphy, there is always a long list of clothing to be made at any time of the year; after all, sometimes you chance on some neat fabric and the project has to wait a bit before being done.
Within these past two weeks, I've cleared out almost 40 sacks and packages of fabrics that I "stored-away" for something special, now that I've had to uncover them because of a move, I'm just driving myself bats trying to figure out how soon I can get into these treasures and make more period clothes!:wink_smil
