  • Test your knowledge of the Indian Wars

With the dilution of history over time, some events fall into obscurity, so I was curious & asked a number of folks-- How many wars were fought in the US prior to 1900? The response was generally 3-4: F&I, Rev, 1812, CW being the most common.

You can argue with the definition of what constitutes a war, but I found the following an interesting perspective on what was considered a war by our CW ancestors, with a focus on the "Indian" problem. How many do you recognize or could use in a period conversation?

This was from an 1854 advertisement:

The best history of the Indian Wars published-colored and plain engravings price only 2 Dollars

" A History of the Indian Wars on the United States from the Discovery to the Present Time", William Moore.

    Contains:
    Early Indian Wars of Florida
    Early Indian Wars of Virginia
Early Indian Wars of New England
    Pequod War
    King Phillips War
    King Williams War
    Wars of the Five Nations
    Queene Anne's War
    Lovewell's War
    Last French & Indian War

    War of the Western Indians
Indian Wars of the Carolinas previous to the Revolition
    Northwestern War -during Washington's Administration
    Cresap's War
    Indian Wars of the Revolution
    Tippecanoe War
    Northwestern War (1812-13)

Off the top of my head I hit 9 of 21. I've got a bunch of reading to do.
