There are plenty of period patterns for hand knit socks...with documentation women/families sent them to the armies. Were women ever hired to home/hand-knit socks for the army (as in paid per pair)?
A friend is wants to make me a pair of era correct socks, she asked me to find out the predominent breed of sheep that the wool would have come from, and what would have been available for home use?
Also need to know if dying the wool at home would have been a normal practice, or was is left in its natural color?
I too would be interested in knowing more about these women doing piece work for the government.
