Dressing for the Photographer

I thought I would start a thread on dressing for period images. As I come across them, I will post addtional snippets from period literature providing guidance on the subject. Remember that Daguerreotypes, Ambrotypes/Ferrotypes (wet-plate collodion positives) and printed-out paper positives (from glass or paper negatives) all portray color generally the same:

Slight topic diversion....As a daguerreotypist and wet-plate artist, I am frequently asked: "Why do people in period images seem to look so very stern"? I found this period (1857) explanation from a photographer's perspective:
