Several years ago, Susan Lyons Hughes, able editress of The Citizen's Companion magazine, wrote a citizen's response to Mr. Hughes' The Authentic Campaigner's Manifesto, called, appropriately, The Authentic Civilian Manifesto.
On first reading it, I was inspired! Here was the "statement of faith" I needed in my goals as a progressive living history participant! Here was a set of statements that were eminently practical, utterly sensible; pointed in their focus on the topic, and yet entirely without the self-defensive heat I'd seen so often from progressives.
As you set your own goals as an Authentic Citizen of the mid-19th century, keep this Manifesto at the top of the list--it neatly covers all the bases. It encompasses an ideal attitude for A-C citizens.
