    Save the date!

Where: Independence Village, near Oakland, Illinois

Theme: We will be portraying a village in Coles County, Illinois, during October 1861. Now that the first summer of the war is behind us, our harvest celebration takes on a more somber note. Village residents will participate in daily life activities and chores, with a keen awareness that the war is beginning to touch all our lives.

When: The event begins on Friday, October 7, and runs through to Monday, October 10.

Details: Further information will be posted. The main point is that this is a strict immersion event -- no modern talk, no modern objects. For more information, please join the Independence Village discussion list. Here's a basic, no-frills event page. If you have any questions, by all means ask.

Had a blast last time, and am looking forward to October. The place should be wonderful in fall foliage.

The first time around was one of the best first person events I've done. Great place to do civilian stuff and I would encourage anyone who likes such things to join us in October.

It'll be really interesting to see what happened with the flowers and herbs Jenny planted in front of the dog trot. I'll also be curious to find out whether there's any kind of apple crop. I'm planning to put in some fall bulbs near the Larson cabin.

I think we're going to have some pears to cut up for pies and for jam.

The summer is going to fast for me but thinking about the event coming sure brightens that up.
Can't wait to move back in and make it home.

The village sounds wonderful and there seems to have been improvements over the past 6 yrs or so since I was first there. I look forward to being there again if at all possible...

              Some great news!

We have a new home opening up in the village, so it looks as though we will be able to accommodate another family. Families with children are especially welcome. The young folk will be able to attend school on Saturday, and will finds lots of playmates in town. Because of this new accommodation, we've decided to extend the deadline to mid-September.

In the midst of all the sesquicentennial events and commemorations, wouldn't it be nice to have an event entirely to ourselves? The Independence Village events are completely free of spectators. The site owners are wonderful to deal with, and they've been eager to work with us on every aspect of our events. If you'd like to experience a weekend away from modern intrusions, modern talk, and modern objects, why not give Independence Village a try?

The October event will be a "harvest home" style of event, with chores and activities appropriate to the season. It is set in October 1861.

At this point we have room for one or two more single ladies. Children are always welcome -- we will make room for them! Gentlemen who travel into the village for the muster will be accommodated in bachelor quarters.

A just 7 days left bump. Still time and room for more I wager. ;)

Yes, that's true. We've pretty much filled up the village at this point, but we have room for one or two more ladies in one of the houses. Children are always welcome.

We could probably accommodate a couple of gentlemen if they're willing to sleep on a pallet rather than in a bed.

                    Thanks, Ron!
