150th Shiloh-Civilian Town of Purdy, March 28th-April 1, 2012
Normally, I’d rather not purposely interject any news of mainstream events into the mix of upper tier events on the Authentic Campaigner, but there is enough interest that I’m getting a lot of email ---and enough confusion caused by the fact that there are two 150th Shiloh events, scheduled for the same weekend, and about 7 miles apart. Silas and Elizabeth tell me what I have meets the criteria for a Civilian Adjunct, so I’m posting it here.
The property to be used by the Blue Gray Alliance 150th Shiloh is contiguous to the Park, and quite large. As with all BGA events, provision is made for a variety of camping styles, from ‘soldiers only’, to ‘civilian only’, to ‘mixed/family garrison’, as well as various ‘campaign’ opportunities. These camping areas are well separated and located with a strong eye given to the view shed of the various areas to minimize modern intrusions.
In attempting to accommodate various reenacting styles, one of my first tasks as civilian “Governor” for the Blue Gray Alliance was to provide a framework for civilians to live and work in proximity to the event action, in a civilian atmosphere. As the BGA is sponsoring a whole series of 150th events, these civilian “Towns” are, of economic necessity, made of canvas. By the way, that “Governor” title is a purely administrative thing within the BGA—once the event goes live, I’m just another old woman in a slat bonnet. Unless the water tanks run low or something and then I better go find a radio………
So, if the Shiloh you want to go to is the same one all these 15th Iowa troops raised on the AC are marching into, go here to register (And lemme tell you, when I hear those drums, I'm running to somewhere I can see, and THEN going to hide:tounge_sm)
For Civilians camping separate from the military, you are welcome to join others folks like you in the "Town of Purdy". In order to register for the Town, using the various drop downs in the registration menu, you’ll need to list the following.
Affliation: Anything there that fits, including the catch-all “Other”
Branch: Period Civilian
Camping: Period-Civilian
The broad rules for the Town of Purdy are pretty simple--
(1) Get in, get unloaded, get your vehicle out, get set up--GET IN PERIOD DRESS and stay that way. That means anytime you are outside your tent, you must be in period dress for the entire event.
(2) Keep any non-period items totally out of sight. If they are in your tent, keep the flaps closed. If you want to learn how to do without those modern things--ask. There will be folks around happy to aid you.
(3) Be prepared to share fires. Town will be laid out in designated streets, and with designated fire areas, both for conservation of wood and for fire safety for the participants.
(4) The area will be totally closed to vehicles at NOON on Friday. If you arrive late, be prepared to carry your things in. Once the Town closes to traffic, no vehicles will be allowed in until after the close of Sunday’s battle.
(5) No military may sleep or stay in the Town on a permanent basis. The Town will be under the control of various occupying forces and may change hands during the course of the event. Members of opposing forces found in Town are subject to arrest and detainment.
(6) Weapons in civilian hands must be personally inspected and approved by the Mayor on a case-by-case basis. They may be confiscated by occupying military authority.
Robert Orrand is serving as Mayor of the Town Of Purdy. You will want to contact him to get on the email list for civilians living in the Town. Our job is to ‘make a playhouse’ here---your job is to figure out how you want to play in it, do your site specific research, and work with the Mayor to enable appropriate scenarios to occur. This is our third “Town” effort under this philosophy, and we find our numbers growing rapidly.
You’ll find ongoing civilian event information here:
The Town will open to participants on Wednesday afternoon, March 28th. Early set up will be allowed for those civilians who are participating in the Union-Pacific Troop Train Effort.
We do hope you’ll join us.
Looking Forward to Living in the Past……….
