As the date has drawn closer, some seats have become available on the Shiloh Troop Train--a joint effort with the Union Pacific Railroad and the Blue Gray Alliance for the 150th Anniversary of the Battle of Shiloh.

This train leaves Kansas City, Mo on Tuesday, March 27, and arrives in West Memphis Arkansas on Wednesday, March 28. Additional transport arrangements are available to aid in completeing the trip to the event site. This effort is open to civilians as well.

      Elaine,

I am planning on signing up for the event and I have a truck and trailer. I see you are in the mid-atlantic, if you are anywhere near Richmond, VA maybe we could all drive together and share the gas? PM me and we can talk about it if you are interested.

                Friends,

We had an excellent work team at the site last weekend. Despite heavy wind and rainstorms throughout the South, we found the area designated for the civilian Town of Purdy to be well situated and well drained. Wood supplies are available for the shared fire areas Bring a period container to carry water, as it will be about 50 yards to a water source.

Due to the size of the site and anticipated numbers, we recommend that you bring needed supplies with you rather than leaving once you've set up. Unload time in the Town of Purdy is limited to 20 minutes, and we close to vehicle traffic at noon on Friday.

The full site closes to vehicles at 9:00 PM Friday evening. It is approximately 3/4 mile from the Town of Purdy to parking and to sutlers. Prepare for a wide range of temperatures and weather conditions.

Registration closes Monday March 12. There are no walk ons.

We do hope you join us.

If I wasn't doing the military thing, I'd love to do this event too. Both are great learning for me.

There are over 250 signed up as "Period Civilian". Probably 200 of those will be in Purdy. And as of late I have had several folks change from Military to Period Civilian. So, I as the mayor, am expecting very close to 200 Purdy civilians.

As Robert says--well thats a pretty good guess on our part, based on mine and Robert's email and phone traffic.

The BGA registration system only tells part of the story-if folks don't look all the way down all the dropdown menus, they may or may not pick the option that gets them in our Purdy sort.

Then there all the folks who are registered by a military commander who is simply getting his unit registered as a group. These folks will end up registered with the 143th Mess Kit Repair Battallion and look like they are going to "Mixed Camps" because the military commander registered them that way. But, these civilians (for whom we have no email information from the military commander) are finding us via several forums or through my Facebook account. At which point we are getting their email and going over standards. In one case, we have 10 civilians we picked up solely because one gentleman raised his hand and said 'seems like I need to do something else'. His military commander had no idea this was even an option for his folks.

So, as we've done for previous events, we will be sorting folks on site, and helping them find a place most appropriate for their impression. For those civilians whose main task is to cook for a bunch of soldiers, well no, they don't really belong in Purdy, as stray soldiers can get arrested there.

And, not everyone is prepared to get in period dress and stay in period dress throughout the event. We've found shared cooking fires to be condusive to safety, education, and general neighborly activity. Some folks can't wrap their heads around the idea that they don't get a fire right in front of their tent.

And we start earlier than the rest of the event--the Town of Purdy closes to vehicle traffic at noon on Friday. Folks can come in after that, but they will have to carry their gear a nice distance in.

We also have a number of known 'day trippers'--participants sleeping off site, but willing to walk in from parking each day about 3/4 of a mile, in order to get to play.

                          Ms. Terre,
I seemed to have made that mistake. When registering, I didn't see the dropdown menu for Purdy, so I simply put 'period civilian'. But I'm glad to hear y'all atleast have an idea of how many Purdy civilians to expect. I look forward to seeing the site on Sunday!

Doesn't hurt a thing Miss Mia. We've laid out streets that are expandable, made a designated separate area for the Athaneum Girls School, for the Hurst home, and for another farm.

As for our other journey and other duties

We will start setting up Wagon Camp on Saturday, as the wagoners must come in early to get animals acclimated and get a good look at the interior roads, the route up from Corinth and the Paddlewheeler March. I need you ladies in by noon on Sunday, ready to work. We will finishing swinging the large canvas for Wagon Camp and set up the kitchen, which will feed upwards of 200 at various points.

After everything is fully set up, y'all get a nap and I go pick up the rental van that will take us to Kansas City. Plan to travel in modern clothing, but wearing your period shoes and period coat---we will consolidate all modern clothing into one carpetbag that I will provide, as your other bags will be subject to search by military authorities. There will be room for your carpetbag in the back of the van, but all luggage will be packed tightly-plan accordingly. I'd suggest bringing the period clothing you wear on the train , packed in a garbage bag for the van trip, as no modern luggage goes on the train.

We leave just prior to midnight, and will be at the Steamboat Arabia when it opens on Monday. You have all day there, and the group overnights in KC about a mile from the train station. With four BeHooped women to a room, it will take early rising to have everyone packed, dressed, and to the lobby by 6:45 to begin shuttling to the Union Pacific Train in time for boarding. Tuesday and Wednesday on the train, and we arrive back in Shiloh Wednesday night.

While we are gone, others have arrived, brought in the meat supply, and the first wave of wagoners left in support of the Corinth March. Thursday will be occupied in making meat pies and other hand food to send with wagons on Thursday afternoon to overnight at Fallen Timbers and with those wagons supporting the Paddlewheeler march on Saturday.

Friday morning, you'll have some free time, and the Town of Purdy will close to traffic and go live at noon. I imagine Mr Hurst will be wanting his domestic help in place by then.

Being the sort of man Fielding Hurst is, he may be hollaring for you sooner.........

Mrs. Lawson, or anyone else in a position to lend assistance--
I have just become aware of a young man on another board (railroad, not CW) who is booked aboard the train to Shiloh and may be getting some less than sterling advice about his wardrobe. I believe he's from the Peoria, IL area. If he sends me his contact information, might I prevail upon you to point him in the right direction so he knows what to wear, or ideally, finds some civilian loaners?
