I was talking to a friend this weekend who is relatively knowlegable when it comes to matters of civilian dress in the 1860's & he told me that sack coats were not nearly as common in the south as they were in the north. He was telling me that in the northern states the sack coat was popular as a garment for the masses, sort of an everymans coat whereas in the south men dressed more according to class so there was more variety in what coats they wore. Can anyone out there give me some feedback on this?
