  • Suitable Frock Coat Material.

My area of participation in the Living History community shifted eras for quite a spell, so I am somewhat out of the loop regarding current sources of suitable period, civilian reproduction fabrics. My how things have changed in a few short years, with so many good sources drying up alas.

Can someone point me in the right direction of a good source of black or brown wool satinette, broadcloth, fine nap flannel or melton fabrics appropriate for a period civilian frock coat?

Thank you in advance for any and all suggestions.

Mr Ben Tart of NC has satinette. Hope you find some fabric.

I would recommend Wm. Booth Draper for broadcloth and flannel.

Yes, I have some of Ben Tart's Satinette. Unfortunately he does not offer it in black or dark brown, and redying such a dark color usually results in spotty or fugitive results, regardless of the process or mordant I use.

I will give William Booth a look, thank you.

The Booth source appears to have what I am after. Thank you for the assistance everyone.

            Sir-
If you are near Gettysburg (PA) , you will enjoy Needle & Thread. Attending events in the mid-to south east, try 96 District Storehouse. B. Black & Sons is online and will offer lovely suitings as well as many of the specific notions and interlining fabrics one needs for tailoring. William Booth, Draper is also a favorite of mine.

            Happy sewing.

Thank you Elaine. I used to frequent N & T when attending events back East. I checked with 96 District Storehouse, but Booth has exactly what I'm after. I'll take a look at Black & Sons as well.

              Cheers.
