Interesting. In about 1990 we (the guys and women) of The Mudsills in Northern Illinois and Southern Wisconsin made a comercial for The State of Illinois Bureau of Tourism about the Lincoln Funeral Train. They Really did want to "get it right", so they asked us. We told them, show us the $$$$$, which they did. We filmed it a a remote crossing in northern Illinois and they used one of the engines from the Midwest Continental RR Museum in North Freedom, Wi. They did make that 1890's engine look "pretty close" to an American 4-4-0 and the engine used in Illinois. (They used about as many engines as Lincoln had "Funerals" on that trip. As usual, it took about 8 hours to film a 1 -2 minute commercial. But, it was pretty neat. You could see my wife in it, but me and Allen Rock (guards) got "cut out". As we did a number of events at North freedom (33d Wisconsin) I would eventually get to be both the Fireman and Engineer on that engine during a number of runs.

The only thing we had wrong was the guards were all members of the VRC and I was the only one that had a VRC uniform, so we had to use Regular Uniforms. John Wedeward, Scott Cross, Tom Rock, Allen Rock, John Dewey, Richard Tibbles, Dick Yedor, Paul McKee, Judy Wedeward, Christy Cross.......

Since it's a future event, it's hard to speak to how serious the organizers really are, but from the civilian guidelines at least it seems as though they're making an effort to be accommodating to those of the c/p/h inclination. As a lowly Westerner with enough other obligations that precluded my involvement in any other Sesquicentennial events during the whole cycle, I'm very excited to be attending this.

The Organizers of the Progressive Civilian Area are VERY SERIOUS. (thank goodness I'm just watching this unfold, because its a daunting task)

So much so that the progressive civilian only camping area has a secondary application process---register for the event here , indicate the progressive civilian area on your application. http://lincolnfuneraltrain.org/participant_info.php

Then you will receive a follow up email to submit a photograph and additional information.

In other words---DO IT NOW. Don't wait until late in the game to sign up and apply. There are standards to be met, and active discussion groups in place now. Event security will be tight and you'll need make your decisions early and be informed about the requirements.
