Help! I'm looking for any primary source material that indicates that fishermen/coastal dwellers in Florida 1860-1870 would have work espadrilles or alpargata, the rope soled footwear common in Spain (and by association Cuba). There was a lot of trade with Cuba from Florida both before and during the war. There were Cuban fishing Ranchos in Charlotte harbor, for example. The warm weather combined with having constantly damp-to-wet feet would seem to indicate such footwear for fishermen, hunters, etc. Leather and salt water just don't mix well, for very long anyway.
