  • Straight sided glassware

I have been looking at still life paintings for images of glassware. This painting has a nice plain straight sided glass.

I'm looking for other images / information about this type of plain glassware, were there other sizes, taller, wider? Trying to find some glassware to use for an event. Most glasses today are either short whiskey sour / tumblers or tall highball. My main shopping locations are thrift stores. I have found some glasses that are narrower in cir. and the height is taller than a whiskey sour but shorter than a highball.

Thank your for any help in this search.

I have seen examples of mid 19th century glasses but have noted the slim profiles and thin bottoms. They appear very fragile unlike the robust version in the painting.
The best examples that I have seen are in a British Artillery Officers Mess Kit of the 1850's. These glasses are more sturdy and you would call them juice glasses today. Let me try and scan the photos I have and post them.
Others that I have seen that are attributed to certain individuals who served in the 1856 to 1866 era are very slim in the walls as well as the base.
These are, of course, items that were imported from the US or Britain during this period.
I will try to post examples of my photos and information from my Regimental Museum.

The following site has a "school" to learn the history of glass-making in the 19th century, a "store" where various original pieces may be bought, and clear pictures and dates on all the glassware depicted. Much of what is depicted is after our period... but enough are in our period that the site is definitely worth some time. http://www.patternglass.com/Store/index.htm

For those who would use this site to try to learn what items are essential for a well-dressed 19th century table... I caution some items have evolved in usage throughout the 19th century. Also, we often assign modern ideas of "fancy" or "nice" to pieces the 19th century folks would not have considered implausible for middle or working class usage.

        Thank you, Erik and Elaine,
The link is helpful, as I recently purchased a pair of blown glass celery glasses (the store did not know what they were selling). Juice glasses is the term that eluded me. I can find quiet a few of those with the thin sides and bottom.
