  • Special Presentation This Weekend - Youngstown, OH

    All,

It has been several years since I have been around these parts - but I hope you are all doing well. I am not sure if this is an appropriate place to advertise a special event, but I'll give it a shot. I will be speaking this weekend about holiday traditions and soldiers' aid societies at my museum, The Arms Family Museum, in Youngstown, OH. If anyone is in the area, please stop by! All of the proceeds benefit education programming and will help me put together a traveling education program about the Civil War.

    Mahoning Valley Historical Society Presents:
Longing for Home – Christmas During the Civil War

    Saturday and Sunday, December 29 & 30, 2:00 pm & 3:30 pm each day

This 45 minute talk will focus on Christmas traditions during the second year of the Civil War, 1862. There will be plenty of original and reproduction artifacts on display, along with an example of a soldier’s box.

The event will take place at The Arms Family Museum, 648 Wick Avenue, Youngstown, Oh.

The event is part of our ongoing exhibit: The “Memories of Christmas Past” which is open through Jan. 6. Admission is $6 for adults, $5 for seniors, and $4 for children ages 3-18.

    Thank you!

    Traci,

Thanks for the announcement. I wish I was visiting family this holiday in Girard, OH so I could attend. The Mahoning Valley Historical Society always puts on great presenetations.

If anyone is traveling up to this presentation, swing by Girard, OH to visit the Henry Barnhiesel House. It should be decorated, as always, in period correct Victorian Christmas decorations. Then swing by Niles, OH to the McKingely National Memorial Museum and Library and ask to see the McKinley Birth Home. It should also be decorated in period correct decorations. Both of these sites are within a twenty minute drive in the same direction from The Arms Family Museum.

    Happy Holidays.
