  • A Favorite Photograph

Since there has been so many military photographs posted as of late, I thought it was time to get some photographs of civilian life up for discussion. I really like this photograph for many reasons. It captures aspects of men's clothing, both as worn by youths and adults. It also shows horses in harness pulling some type of cart (portable darkroom?).

[View of a horse and covered cart in front of white frame building with signs for County House, J. Griggs and L.J. Phillips, Daguerrian Rooms, in Thompson, Connecticut].

    CREATED/PUBLISHED
    [between 1850 and 1860]

    NOTES
    Photographer unidentified, possibly L.J. Phillips.

Phillips was active in Connecticut in the mid-1850s. His cloth sign most likely indicates that he worked as an itinerant daguerreotypist.

    Hallmark: [double paschal lamb] 40.

Case: front, Rinhart 256; back, quadrafoil design with interlaced geometric border.

    Original served by appointment only.

    Purchase/exchange; Dr. Gary Vroegindewey; 1981; (DLC/PP-1981:R380.22).

Forms part of: Daguerreotype Collection (Library of Congress).

Exhibited: American Treasures of the Library of Congress. Washington, D.C., 2003-2004.

Thank you...love the hats on the young boys! The one young man between the horse and wagon....what a pose.
