This photograph is in the collection of the Maryland Historical Society. It is titled "College friends" and was captured circa 1860.
There are some really interesting details in this photograph. I like the checkered stripe down the top-hatted fellows trousers and I think that two of the students are wearing Banyans. I won't even try to understand what the student on the right with the long pipe is wearing on his head.
There is so much that can be studied in this photograph, both clothing and furniture.
As a side note, does anyone know of a pattern for a Banyan?
