  • Velvet or Velveteen collar for a paletot?

I am working on creating a civilian paletot based on a photograph of one of my ancestors. The collar of the coat appears to be either velvet or velveteen. Would velveteen have been widely used at the time or is it more likely that the collar is made of velvet? Which would have been more common for use on jacket collars of middle class individuals?
I appreciate any advice that anyone may have.
    Thank you.

Several originals I've looked at had silk velveteen. Good luck finding it though, it isn't widely available. High quality cotton velveteen of fine quality looks very similar.
