Education in the south during the cw/antebellum period

All,
My family is relatively new to this hobby; However, my wife's been teaching History/Social Studies for 25 years. When doing living history, she tries to teach/portray a typical Southern school teacher of the period. Does anyone have any good sources or recommendations ref 1st person portrayals of Southern teachers? She's researched several websites and some period books, but feels someone her at The AC may have better insight or some good sources. (Apologies if this has been covered somewhere else on the site. If so, please point us in the right direction. Thanks!)

I suggest two books that relate to The Athenaeum Girls School in Columbia, TN. The first is a history of the school: A Southern Saga by Linda Gupton. The other is a diary kept by the son of the headmaster of the school while he was in the Confederate Army: Confederate Diary of Robert D. Smith, transcribed by Jill K. Garrett. While Robert's diary isn't per se an account of the school, he often referred to what would have been happening back there if things were normal. Just outside of Natchez, Mississippi, in a town called Washington, there is Historical Jefferson College. Jefferson Davis attended Jefferson College. The college is still open for tours, and many activities are scheduled there during the year. The folks there are very nice, and I am sure they can point you in the right direction. I tried to PM you, but your box was full. Have you ever been to Jefferson College, I would venture to guess it would be a great place for the civilian side of the hobby.

I've been there to visit with a group of ladies who has an annual sewing get together at Jefferson College in the spring. It's a beautiful place. I'm sorry about the PM problem. I don't know how my box could be full but I will check on that, thanks.

The reason I was able to see Jefferson College is that we have a (barely) organized group that goes to visit Natchez during the Spring Pilgrimage each year and we usually overlap the sewing ladies.
