  • Buttons on a civilian sack coat

I am looking for information on correct buttons for a civilian sack coat.

I am looking at wood buttons but I need coat and cuff buttons and have not been able to locate any correct ones.

Can anyone tell me where I may find correct wood coat and cuff buttons or an appropriate alternative.

May I ask several questions? Why are you wanting to use wooden buttons on the coat? And what is the person you are portraying? North vs South, farmer vs businessman etc. can make a difference. And what fabric is the coat made of? With more info, myself and/or other AC members can give you a very detailed response.

What Beth said - there are so many possibilities that you can use on a civilian coat. It does depend on what sort of civilian you are portraying.

My focus is portraying a journeyman printer in Michigan covering a time frame from just before to just after the war.

Here are a few examples of different buttons:

ID:	223913 Metal button made to mimic fabric

Other options are horn, hard rubber, vegetable ivory and composition.
All of these in my opinion were more common than wooden buttons.

Here are some links to button info:

As far as obtaining correct buttons, check out the AC approved vendors or on line sources.

Indeed...they have recently acquired and restored some original machinery used to produce the fabric covered ones. They had some advertised on Etsy not too long ago, and some were pictured on their FaceBook page https://www.facebook.com/pages/The-B...60534304063747
