  • Advice & Vendors for civilians

    Ladies & Gentlemen,

Parden my ignorance in this matter as I have done nothing but the military side of the hobby for over 20 years, but I thought it best to go to those with far more knowledge in this matter than I.

    My Dilemma,
The woman who has handled the civilian side of my group has had to step down due to failing health and in her place have stepped up, what I refer to as "Jackbooted Thugs in Crinoline". Instead of an all encompassing approach to all aspects and social structures of civilian life during the Civil War they are focused on and I quote; "men & women of privilege" while not concerning themselves at all with, " those poor people". Considering that this completely ignores the majority of the civilian populace of the time, all the while priding themselves in their balls and teas, I am reaching out to you for assistance.

I would like to create a civilian information packet to present to new and potential members who would rather travel to events with their husbands, significant others and families than play the 19th century version of "The Real Housewives". I am striving to keep it simple with an itemized list of everything required, needed or cosmetic for an excellent impression, male or female, of the average civilian. Just as I have done with my military side; a rating system for the best places & passable places for; shoes, trousers, hats, corsets, dresses, bonnets, shirts, blouses and details ad nauseum. I do not see this situation ending well unless we can pull the reins in and bring our authenticity standards for our civlians up while still being civil about the whole matter. For this I am beseaching you for any and all information you can provide me.

    Thank you for your time,
    Michael Tommarello

Sounds like a reasonable request. If the "authentic" elite ignore and/or diminish the rank and file, poor folks and other potential contributors, they are likely to find themselves unsupported in the long run. It does not appear that government funding, let alone interest in the historical preservation in this country will be forthcoming anytime soon. You may find yourself with no place to play! Unless you can wrangle an invitation to camp on the White House lawn to enjoy a concert by the "divas"...

It's the whole elitist attitude that burns my Johnny Cakes. I can appreciate the desire to look pretty, but not everyone was floating around in their silken finest all the time. We have several college aged ladies who, in my humble opinion, have a very good impression of your common female workers at the Allegheny Arsenal and have tailored a display and talk surrounding the young girls who worked at the arsenal. Any 20ish young woman, attractive who gets a kick out of having messed up hair and smearing a little bit of gun powder on their face to have "The Look", is alright by me. The "divas", howeverm merely look down their noses, critisize their kit head to toe and then will not offer their knowledge or advice as to how they would or could improve their impressions. I really don't understand the outright nastiness some have towards others when they actually seek out those with the knows help. It's attitudes such as that, that wreck units through in fighting.

I think you may have explained the problem yourself.

        "Any 20ish young woman, attractive"

And, just my past experience, but it was this kind of problem that we solved by not permitting women to join our military unit. If they wanted to start their own organization and go to the same events, that was their business. But it was not our's.

Sir, it appears you have an issue within your unit.
The solution needs to be worked out internally and
the AC is not the place to criticize impressions. Since
you are military, I would suggest a respected civilian
in your group be appointed to address the problem.
