  • 2014 Civilian Events?

    Greetings!

We are working hard on the military portion of the 2014 event schedule. I am wondering what you all have planned on the civilian side for this year. We have a few posts on this, but not many. Can anyone let us know what's on tap for 2014?

      Re: 2014 Civilian Events?

This info was posted in the civilian folder before, but it certainly can't hurt to repost it here:

      Date: May 16 -18, 2014
Name: Enduring the Storm: Hopewell 1864
Location: Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site, Elverson, PA
      Sponsor/Host: Jessica Craig
      Capacity: @ 40 civilians

There is complete information on the event announcement here on the AC, and on the event website. It really is an awesome, history heavy event of the type that is all too rare these days.

      Take care,

          Tripping Along the Towpath

The year is 1859 in the last heyday of the canal system. Railroads are bring goods and news ever closer. Political tensions rise as the summer sun warms the trees.
Join us in bringing the canal towpath to busy life through encounters dramatic and mundane.

Event: 6-8 June 2014. Along the C&O Canal Towpath adjacent to Canal Trust LockHouse 25 near Poolsville, Maryland.
Mode: We will rent the Canal Trust Lock-House 25 near Poolsville, MD. Someone volunteers to portray the "Lock-House Keeper", who will stay in the lock-house. Other participants form "teams" who begin the event (Friday evening) from points along the towpath, based on distance they'd like to travel in relation to business at the Lock-House. When the teams encounter each other, interaction is encouraged. The event will conclude on Sunday afternoon.
Participants will decide for themselves who they are, what business they have to travel the towpath, what business they have at the lock-house, and how their team will act and react appropriately to fellow teams.
Participants not staying at the lock-house will need to carry bedding, food supplies, etc. to camp overnight outdoors.
Persons with mobility issues have first chance at portraying the lockhouse keeper, family or guests. The Canal Trust Lock-House #25 will accommodate 8 people in shared space.
There are designated camping sites along the path with fire rings. Water fountains are along the path for potable water. Porta-privies are conveniently placed along the path.
Lock-House 25 is near the Edwards' Ferry boat launch, adding the possibility for your team to include water travel if you have a period plausible water-craft. In 1859, the Lock-house included a store and ferry crossing, so was a bustling area. The Lock-House is furnished to represent the 1860s with chairs/tables, dishes, beds (bring your own linens), and wash stands with basin/ewer. The house has no electricity or running water (porta-privy is a short distance away). It has a large basement area with a number of encounter possibilities.
First person encounters are expected of all participants for the duration of the event. Please be clear on this expectation. Will we toss you out if you make a mistake? Not if we can tell you are making the best effort you can. If you are “screwing around”… you’re outta there.
Why rent the lock-house? We want a variety of folks to be able to participate, including a few who do first person well but not the distance walking as much. We feel more secure in a fluid event with an option for nasty weather that doesn't de-rail the event entirely. A "home base" can allow for creativity and safety. (In other words, the lock-house keeper will be in first person too; but they'll have the emergency cell phone, maps with each teams' likely travel plotted, and can help facilitate safety and communication among participants and park staff)
Cost for the event will be a tally of the expenses divided by the number of participants. Participants are responsible for their own food and travel expenses, so we’re trying to keep the event costs to a very bare minimum.
I will cap the event at about 25 people, 8 accommodated in the lock-house.
          Only non-military portrayals are appropriate.
          Lock-House 25: Poolsville, MD; near towpath mile 30.9; http://www.canaltrust.org/quarters/lockhouse-25.php
          Mileage Chart: http://www.bikecando.com/_bikecando/mileage-chart.aspx
Again, you are receiving this invitation because we can trust you to bring your best first person efforts and boundless creativity to this event. As we learn what portrayals folks have in mind, we might suggest a portrayal, encounter, or team that might further interactions for you. Teams may have as few as two or as many members as works for you.
Goals are first person interaction and experiencing the towpath in 1859. Beyond that, your limits are your creativity (well... and safety/common sense).
Negatives to doing an event along the C&O Canal: encounters with hikers/bikers/boaters who are clueless about re-enacting, camping only in designated camping areas breaks the spontaneity of first person, and modern amenities along the path that need ignored.
Registration is by Invitation ONLY. To receive an invitation, the following procedure is expected. Drop Elaine a line at elainekessinger @ yahoo.com. We have an online chat on your previous experiences and personal event goals. The expectations are made clear. If we’re good and you’re still interested, you’ll be invited to join the yahoo group.

Plans are coming together quickly, so please don't wait... contact us today.

Wow, that tow path event sounds absolutely fantastic!

During Columbus Day weekend, October 10 - 13, 2014, there will be an event at Independence Pioneer Village in Illinois. I'll post more info in a separate thread.

Essentially, it's a combination civilian / military event that focuses on local and national elections Meanwhile, soldiers will be in the village; many of them will have finished their three-year enlistments and are eager to return to their everyday professions. There may, or may not, be some untoward characters in the village as well, but hush about that.

There will be an Inn, a school, Sunday church service, a fully-stocked General Store, and other businesses. Impressions should be suitable to the time and place: essentially a respectable rural Illinois village.

If you're interested, please join the google group and the facebook page. I'll post all that information on the proper thread.

"Indy" events are hard-core immersion. The village is composed of early to mid-19th century log houses.
