  • Postmark Rubber Stamp

I am working on some research for an impression and coming up short in an area. Hoping someone on here might have some insight.

I have been trying to find photo’s (or a detailed description) of a postmark rubber stamp from the mid-19th century. Finding images of the actual postmark’s are easy since they are on all the envelopes from the period. But searching and searching for info on the actual rubber stamp has been fruitless. My only lead is a friend who has a friend who had some info. I was told there that to make the postmark it was one stamp but had letter/number blocks that would be changed out to change the date.

Thanks for any leads or info you might have!

    Jeremy,
Here are some examples, from the National Postal Museum (which is a part of the Smithsonian). Several of which are like what you described: http://arago.si.edu/flash/?s1=3

And here is one that I own (although the Postal Museum identifies it as post CW).

Thank you for sharing your original cancel stamp! The post mark is what I have been looking for and you helped with that as well. I had found that museum website before in my searching but somehow did not find the post mark stamps I was looking for. This time I did. Thank you for directing me back there!

For those wondering here they are and an envelope for comparison. The one is post war but it doesn't look like things changed all that much.
