Re: Involving the kids...
My 7 (soon to be 8) year old twins have attended events with us since they were 6 months old, and they love it. We've been to a couple of mainstream events, a couple one day living history things, and most of their reenacting has been at semi-immersion civilian events. We go modern camping with them, but we've yet to camp out at event, mostly because that isn't accurate for the vast majority of situations. They have stayed with us in various historic houses, often really camping indoors due to the houses being unfurnished historic structures.
I have only done my usual military impression with them at the mainstream events because again, it isn't accurate for little ones, or most civilians to be anywhere near a battle. The exception being New Market where my wife was doing the civilian adjunct at the Bushong Farm. Otherwise I do civilian, so that I can help watch the kids, and our experience can be a family one together.
An awesome feature of reenacting with children, especially as they have gotten older is that they have learned to love the freedom we give them, and also their ability to entertain themselves with simple child games and amusements. They make friends, the run around, and they do what kids are supposed to do, all in a safe and natural environment, surrounded by history. What could be better?
Take care,
