  • Looking For a Quality Civilian Sack Coat

    Hi Everyone,

I haven't checked in here for a while so I would like to cast out a line and see who might be able to help me out with some info. I am soliciting from Approved Vendors and members at large to see how I can get a quality sack coat made for me. As I transition from soldier to soldier/citizen, I am trying to assemble a quality wardrobe.

If anyone here has for sale the coat (new or like-new) that I am looking for, I would like to hear from you. I am not coming up with many reliable sources on my own, so your help is appreciated.

Need a size 44 or 46 sack coat in preferably an olive drab or even brown. Please help a guy out. If you can make me one, please reply also.

    Many thanks.

You haven't checked out the excellent Corner Clothiers, Ben Tart or Galla Rock options?

Corner Clothiers I have dealt with in the past. She is hard to contact. I will check out your other two suggestions. Thank you!

If you are at all handy with needle and thread (the skills, as well as the merchant. ;) ), Ben Tart and Galla Rock both offer various garment kits as well. The sack coat is not difficult for all but the neophyte, and quite a bit cheaper to buy too. I've assembled several of Ben Tart's mark up kits, and they went together easily.

Not to hijack this thread, but I am also looking for a good sack coat. What are some good fabrics for a middle class civilian for a coat. Some kind of coat that working class would have worn. Not many people are offering broadcloth. Cassimere, satinet, kersey, jean? I am leaning toward something in there previous mentioned perhaps. I am leaning toward darker color like black but would someone who wore one for work might go form something in grays to not show soiling as much?

One of my pards was at Perryville with us this past weekend wearing a Ben Tart Boar Brown jean civilian sack coat he bought from North State Haberdashery. I liked it so much I ordered the same coat for myself this morning.

Sorry to chime in late on this. I've been busy with a project that kept me away from anything else. I concur with Phil, with the demise of the FHW's line of fabrics, Ben Tart is the way to go with civilian fabrics. His jean, satinet and Cassimeres are all excellent. If you are looking for civilian broadcloth, William Booth, Draper is a good source.
