  • Two interesting books

    Greetings Friends,

I'm not sure if this is the correct place to post this, but I'd like to recommend two new books that I found that others might enjoy. Although I am often searching antique stores to find just the right period furniture pieces to use at events, I am not always lucky in finding them. Consequently, I found two nice books that would aid me.

The first is British Campaign Furniture, Elegance Under Canvas, 1740-1914. By Nicholas A Brawer. ISBN# 0-8109-5711-6 $45.
This is a great book as it shows just about every description of foldable, bendable, traveling army furniture and lighting of the day, including detailed pictures of how the pieces assembled with makers hallmarks, and notes. Granted that the book is written for British Army, the advertisements and illustration plates would have found their way into a joiners shop. Some pieces like this were found advertised in the western expansion period of the 1840-50s.

The second book, Boxes & Chests. By Alan and Gill Bridgewater. ISBN#0-8117-2559-6 $20
This book is good for those who can't afford to purchase trunks and chests but want the plans with photos of how to paint and decorate them just like the originals. Mind you, you do have to have a good assortment of fancier tools (various chisels and power saws) to complete the more ornate styles of boxes.

I don't know how much interest there is out there in building you own with replica furniture, but some folks have the ambition to go for it. I have that ambition, but whether I have good reason is another subject. The diary of my building my own pieces will no doubt be interesting, certainly with many pleas of old J's help (he helps a lot) :wink_smil Rescue is a more accurate word for help. But I've had many years of making boxes with square nails, so how hard can a carved trunk be right?
