All,
I have searched around this forum, my notes, asked several people and I humbly post this question in need of period remedies and look forward to any advice.
I have a quality reproduction stoneware inkwell that I used to use at Living Histories and occasionally in the field and it has sat in the closet for about five years now due to my inability to use it in the field because of deployment and various other things. Unfortunately it was put away full of ink. The issue is caked up ink inside the stoneware inkwell in which I cannot seems to dislodge fully or dissolve entirely. I am looking for a period remedy in addition to what I have already tried to accomplish this. Here are some of the period methods I have already tried:
1. Boiling water and shaking. Unfortunately this only dislodged some caked ink in chunks which was useless without grinding it back into powder. After numerous attempts, most of the ink in caked up form still exists.
2. High acidic vinegar (both hot and cold) and shaking. Same result as number one with fewer results of chunks.
3. Methods number one and two and scraping with a metal wire and a not so authentic method of a modern scrubbing device which I believe to be not period so I won't mention it here.
If someone has a period correct method, please post here.
Additionally, I have the question of whether I still use it with additional ink and let it slowly dissolve over time and repeated use.
Very respectfully,
Matt Semple
