  • Matching headwear and outerwear for women?

Was matching headwear and outerwear done during this era? I have heard that mismatched clothing was normal, but I have a beautiful piece of silk fabric that I think would make an excellent warm weather mantle and I've already made a bonnet out of it. Any thoughts? :)

Thoughts are... from what I have seen in period sources... that a bonnet was often made in a somewhat neutral color and the trimmings changed out to compliment (not necessarily "match") the ensemble... this assumes one is "fashion plate fashionable" and wealthy enough to pull that off. Sunbonnets, whether corded or slatted, are not matched to a dress at all. Those often came in white with a brown or green print according to research done by a milliner I trust.
Advice... take a look at all the dresses and coats you have. They will probably be in a similar color family. Choose bonnet trimmings that will compliment at least two dresses and your coat.
