  • What not to buy

    Dear Sir,
The best way to learn about historic clothing is to study extant and excellent examples. Please do not post poor "repro" attempts on eBay for discussion here. I am locking this thread to preserve the focus of the forum.

These items are posted on ebay. Here is a perfect example to tell new recruits what not to buy! Look at some of these items of clothing this man is trying to sell as re-enactors uniforms! Some people will stoop mighty low to make a dollar! For your entertainment pleasure, here is just one of his sets of clothing. Make sure you check out the shirt and the holster. You`ll really get a kick out of his Texas impersonation!

    Re: What not to buy

    Mr. Young,

It's no joke, and I didn't have to bother to see that there are silly outfits being sold on ebay with the name of being called authentic. It happens all too often. I saw a site once that had the very worst bonnets with links to a web page that touted that all were 'authentic CW era'......all were shabby and looked as though they had floated up from the titanic. I'm not sure if the problem persits because some folks don't know their history or if they are greedy for a buck.
Sadly, the same situation can be found closer to home. Sometimes you will find truly horrifc costumes being sold on sutler's row. Again, you wonder if it's ignorance or the stuggle to make a dollar. However, with the excellent posts found here, and the knowledgable people, there is talent working wonders, not to mention saving the newbies.
The best advice is to wait, research, learn about interpretation and your character, and always continue to study and improve yourself. And visit AC often. :D

That's pretty bad--looks like someone cut up some old woolen blankets to make those jackets... :cry_smile

Nice suspenders on the "cavalry captain." :tounge_sm
Its common sense and been said before but why dont people just use correct patterns and material? Seems like that would be the easiest thing for a sutler to do.
