civilian pants - linen?

Would linen and cotton blend plaid pants be suitable for a Northern gentleman? (I believe linens were worn by Southern gentlemen - but were they worn by gentlemen frequently in the North also?)

Lindsey,
Linen is more of a seasonal thing than a regional one. Linen would be worn in the summer in both the North and South as it generally cooler than wool. A linen/cotton blend is fine, as long as the plaid looks period.
