  • (re) covering a parasol

My lovely wife, bless her, would like to recover an original parasol frame (with folding handle, whale bone ribs and ivory tips - ooh!) Does anyone have any advice regarding how-to and colors? The tattered remains of fabric on the parasol are brown silk with a green silk lining piece around the center. The specific event she wants it for will be set in the 1830s which I suppose may make a difference in the color choice.
    Thanks for any help!

I'd suggest getting in touch with Martha Vincent. Marta's done quite a bit of restoration work on parasols. Unfortunately, I can't find her e-mail address right now :( She works with Kay Gnagey of Originals by Kay quite a bit.

I'll see if I can find that e-mail (I'm sure I still have it somewhere in this mess!?!?!)

That sounds right. Thanks Virginia! I'm still trying to find stuff that's squirreled away in various places after we moved to my husband's new duty station in Europe back in January.

You may also want to go to Marta's parasol web site at:

I just received my parasol that Marta recovered for me and she did a WONDERFUL job. She really knows what she's doing and would probably be able to consult on what an 1830's parasol would require. Color isn't just the issue....I believe that the shape of the parasol when open, the length of the handle, etc. is also a factor.

          Good luck!

Didn't know that she'd starting putting her stuff online at Seth Magosky's site. You'll probably reach her faster through her e-mail. I'd also tell you to try and catch her at an event depending on where you're located, but I don't know her event schedule this year.

Thank you for the assistance. Ms. Vincent responded with a very friendly and informative message. My wife and I also enjoyed perusing her website.
