Vest Linings and Backings

I am getting ready to order materials to construct a vest. I was wondering, was it common for the lining to be of the same material as the backing? Also, what sort of material seems to be common for the backings and linings respectively? I have heard that black and brown cotton sateen is good. Is that stuff also known as polished cotton? Thank you all so much for your help.
