  • New Texas newspapers added

I have just added two new newspaper files to my website that may be of particular interest to Texans, or to those who portray Texans:

Democrat and Planter [Columbia, TX], 1855-1861

Columbia (West Columbia is now better known), is SSW of Houston in what was then sugar country. The closest current reenactment to it is probably George Ranch out of Richmond. This paper did, however, run a very nice article on the ladies' swimming school in Paris, France, and had articles reporting conditions in other parts of Texas.

    Semi-Weekly News [San Antonio, TX], 1862-1863, 1865

No need to explain where San Antonio is. There are actually only about 3-4 issues in the spring of 1865. The paper covers the city's efforts to help the poor and also includes an account of the explosion at the Powder Mill, among other things.

A while back I added a couple of other titles that were just scattered issues--
    Henderson [TX] Times, 1863-1865

East Texas Times [Henderson, TX], 1862

As you might surmise, I'm trying to finish up all of the Texas Civil War newspapers that have survived to be microfilmed....at least that any library will send me on interlibrary loan. I suspect a trip to Austin is in my future. Rats! ;-)

    Re: New Texas newspapers added

    Dear Miss Betts,

Thank you for your posts about the newspapers. I love to read old papers and have collected a few that have proved invaluable with my impression. I find that if you can get a series of papers together and copy them for your friends, it makes a great interpretation when everyone is discussing the latest news found from a shared paper. More than once I've used some of your notes and mailed them to friends. Thank you for the excellent research.

Since you research primarily with ephemera, here's a question for you. While I often search online auctions, I wonder if you know any sources who sell and deal exclusively with antique newspapers.I'd like to find some NY Ledger's if possible as well as some SC papers. Also, apart from the Harper's papers, does anyone reprint old newspapers or periodicals?
    Many thanks for your time.
    Mfr,
    Judith Peebles

I work only with microfilm from libraries, so I don't have any experience with dealers in the actual article. I'll bet Mark Jaeger might know--he can find the most interesting things online. There are a few of the Southern Illustrated News being reprinted and sold at national parks. Occasionally I run across one-shot reprints at various state parks and museums--none South Carolina that I recall. Someone has reprinted some Godey's and Arthur's Home Magazine (?), but I would have to check at home and see if they are into the war years. Maybe Virginia Mescher or someone else will chime in.
