I have just added two new newspaper files to my website that may be of particular interest to Texans, or to those who portray Texans:
Democrat and Planter [Columbia, TX], 1855-1861
Columbia (West Columbia is now better known), is SSW of Houston in what was then sugar country. The closest current reenactment to it is probably George Ranch out of Richmond. This paper did, however, run a very nice article on the ladies' swimming school in Paris, France, and had articles reporting conditions in other parts of Texas.
Semi-Weekly News [San Antonio, TX], 1862-1863, 1865
No need to explain where San Antonio is. There are actually only about 3-4 issues in the spring of 1865. The paper covers the city's efforts to help the poor and also includes an account of the explosion at the Powder Mill, among other things.
A while back I added a couple of other titles that were just scattered issues--
Henderson [TX] Times, 1863-1865
East Texas Times [Henderson, TX], 1862
As you might surmise, I'm trying to finish up all of the Texas Civil War newspapers that have survived to be microfilmed....at least that any library will send me on interlibrary loan. I suspect a trip to Austin is in my future. Rats! ;-)
