Monday July 5th 1858.
The 4th of July falling on yesterday the Sabbeth, today was celebrated in its place.
The Str Jamestown passed up to Richmond this morning bearing the remains of President Munroe [Monroe] which have been transported at the expense of the State of Va from New York where he died & was buried to the Cementerry near Richmond [Ed. note-Hollywood Cemetery where he is encased in nice wrought iron, nearby is President John Tyler.] the body was escorted by the 7th regiment of New York volunteers who passed up in the Str Glencove. The Str Ericson transported both regiment & corpse to Norfolk but was of too great a draught of water to go up to RIchmond & was the reason of the other boats being employed.
Finished Harvest by 10 O.C. at Bermuda plantation this morning and cut down all the weath at the Island except about 2 acres upwards of 400 shocks not yet put at the Island, all the shocking done at Bermuda.
Booker [yep, Jim Booker] Bins, Solomon Archer & Davy jr & William Thompson passed from Bermuda to Island this morning.
Paid Biship's Acct $2.77 up to date Burgess present, no receipt taken.
Receive of Dr Harrison the rents account, deducted & settled $2.73. Paid him $5., he owes me 60¢ on acct. Dr Harrison went to Bermuda to see Mary Ann child this evening. [snip]
One could argue no rest for the weary this July 4th at the estate of Dr. Richard Eppes, the fourth as he said was on a Sunday and he merely attended church.
