    Re: Baby Cap

Beginning next season, the baby will be 4-6 months or so (depending when your season starts up!), so he will be pretty much out of his first infancy caps (usually discarded at the same time he gets shortened, and goes into calf-length dresses (four to seven months). He'll still need a sunbonnet when it's bright out, with a deep curtain to keep off the sun, etc, and it will be patterned the same as a girl's sunbonnet, actually, as would quilted hoods for cold-weather wear.

Until he toilet trains, the clothing is quite unisex. Boys can of course be dressed in more "manly" plaids, stripes, and prints, and their clothing can use pleats instead of gathers, but the styles and shapes are identical to what their sisters will wear.

As an infant at events, he'll also need undershirts, petticoats (or combination shirts/pcoats), little frocks, pinafores/smocks, stockings, shoes, and potentially little calf-length drawers to cover a modern diaper. In addition, a sunbonnet, little jacket, and a spare blanket/shawl is very nice to have!

      Re: Baby Cap

      Congratulations to you!

Mrs. Elizabeth Stewart Clark (www.elizabethstewartclark.com) offers a variety of patterns for infants' clothing, specifically one for "Infant Caps & Hoods". I've heard wonderful things about her children's patterns.

Some of the other people who frequent this site do wonderful custom work and might be willing to make a little cap.

For a pictorial reference, may I suggest the online children's clothing collection of the Wisconsin State Historical Society: https://www.wisconsinhistory.org/mus...arentID=376566

This website offers photos of many original items, including infant caps.

Thanks for the information and it appears to be big help to get ready for next year. My wife has two dresses which she can use and we were looking for the cap.
