  • Butter churn question

I will be doing an inteprative program soon,(the end of this month.)on butter churning, and would like to find out when butter churning came about. I know it came to the US with our ancestors, but when and where did it start before then? If anyone has any clue, it will be greatly appreciated and add to the program! Thank you!

    Re: Butter churn question

Try doing a google search on "history of butter"
Here is one that I found http://webexhibits.org/butter/
Good luck with your program, hope this is what you are looking for.

Kathy, the easiest way to make sure your name is included in all posts/responses is to add an automatic signature to your User Control Panel; the link to that is in the header links on the forum pages. (Mod stuff done, topic stuff commences!)

        Butter stuff:
Are you looking for information on butter precisely, or on the mechanics of the churn arrangements used mid-centuryand their earliest dates?

I've got a note or two on "bucket" churning on the westward trails mid-century, wherein the cream was placed in a closed bucket, fixed to the wagon, and was hopefully churned by the action of the road, and ready to rinse when the train stopped for nooning. However, that's not the typical "making butter from in-place cows."
        Regards,
        Elizabeth Clark

Elizabeth Clark, Thank you for ALL your information!!! You've been great!!! The program I'm doing is for becoming a "certified intepreter" and in class, you have to write, and give a 10 min. program, so I can only use so much information. But, I do plan on doing more programs about butter churning, so any info. may be used at a later date! The site Susan Armstrong gave me has so much info, that I think with that, I'll be able to do anything about butter!!! THANK YOU!!! Kathy Smith
