  • Soldier's Mittens

    Greetings all,

With all the threads about knitting here, I thought perhaps someone could help me. I'm generally good with handwork, and tend to knit rather even and tight, however, my trouble is finding a good pattern.

I've tried twice to make a pair of soldiers mittens with the thumb and index finger but cannot get the correct guage and thumb gusset. I use 5 double pointed needles, the latest one was a size 7 and the weight of yarn that I prefer is a Lambs Pride Worsted 4 oz. The previous pair was a 2-or-3 oz weight also LP.

The works turns out well with my style of knitting, I tend to knit continental. I think the trouble is that I have a mental block on getting the gusset and finger completed......that or the pattern just isn't working for me.

I know that Godey's had a pattern published, but I do not have all of it. Does anyone have any tips or hints where I may learn more information of how to finish these gloves? I know that OUT has a pattern, but I'd just like something that could help me get this done asap.

I tend to do more knitting during the fall and winter months, and after this project is done I've been asked to do a sontag or shawl. Another question, has anyone read the book Weekend Knitting, and what is your thoughts about the fingerless mitts on pg 96 and fingerless gloves on pg 104? Both look so simple they are what I call 'car work.' ...something to do on your way to an event.
