  • Quilt Exhibit

For what it's worth, there is a relatively nice exhibition of quilts from the early 19th century to the late 20th currently on display at the Chicago Art Institute. There is a truly stunning example of a bedcover that is silk taffeta with appliqued silk (it's a flower basket pattern with a border of grapes and leaves). If nothing else, it is a really wonderful look at colors, fabric (there's an 1850s quilt that has edging made out of a white cotton with a multi-colored polka dot print) and quilting techniques. The way the exhibit is set up makes it very accessible and relatively easy to study. If you're in the Chicago area in the next week and a half, I would encourage you to take a look see (Tuesdays are free to the general public).

Check out the Art Institute's website for admission information:
Located downtown by Millennium Park, this top art museum is TripAdvisor's #1 Chicago attraction—a must when visiting the city.

Is there a catalog of the exhibit? I would like to have one if so.

If you are in the neighborhood, there's a first rate show going on at The Genesee Country Village in Mumford NY. I know little to nothing about quilts but still found the show very interesting.

        Hey Katie,
Thanks for the notice--how I wish I was back in Chicago at the moment! :cry_smile

Is the exhibit going to be up for more than a week and a half by any chance?

The art department at my college is sponsoring a trip to the Institute in two weeks to see the Seurat exhibit. They just announced it today. Good timing! I've already been in the mind to go. Perhaps I'll have to use me free Tuesday next week to head up there. How'd you find out about it?

My professor made mention that it's seven dollars to get in.

Check out the Wade Hall Quilt Collection currently on display at the William T. Young Library, University of Kentucky-Lexington. I saw this a few months ago and it's superb. As I recall, there are some CW-era quilts in the exhibit:

Wow, I didn't realize the exhibit has been there since March...would have made a point to go see it. :tounge_sm

Those of you who have seen it, any ideas if it is a loaned exhibit and will be somewhere else after September?

                Thanks!

                  Re: Quilt Exhibit

If you are interested in quilts and your are able to go...GO!
Depending on the institution some quilts might only be shown once in a while, they may not be shown again for quite some time if ever again depending on condition.
Some quilt shows display privately owned quilts that are returned ASAP after a show and may never be shown again. Also quilt shows may be a one time weekend show. Some quilts are documented in a quilt project and published which is wonderful.
One other option would be to view them privately and you may have to pay a fee to do so, and you are limited in most cases on how many will be taken out and shown. Go and enjoy the show!

                    Re: Quilt Exhibit

This exhibit is actually part of the CAI's permanent collection. They have new exhibits once every four months (three months on, one month to take down and put up a new exhibit). They might eventually loan it out, but I wouldn't expect to see it anywhere soon, considering the "down time" that is afforded particularly valuable collections of textiles in order to not place undue amounts of stress on them.

I sure wish I was back home (50 minutes from the art institute) instead of Cali for the semester!

                      Thanks for the info everyone!
